Await My Return: Part 1
Jesus commands us in Matthew 24 to "watch" and "be ready" for His coming. This hopeful expectancy should shape our daily lives, inspiring purity and preparation as we anticipate the day when He will return in glory.
Where this command is found:
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
Have you considered your life in light of eternity? Life is short but eternity is long. If you are a born again believer your eternal destiny is secure. However, God has given you a window of time here on this earth to invest your life in that which will count for forever. The great preacher Jonathan Edwards is said to have prayed “Lord, stamp eternity on my eyeballs.”
Jonathan Edwards made 65 resolutions that, through Christ’s empowerment, he would seek to live out and would help him keep an eternal perspective. One of those resolutions was as follows: “Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if I expected it would not be above an hour, before I should hear the last trump.” One of the reasons God used Edwards in such a mighty way is because, as this resolution shows, he lived his life in light of the second coming of Christ.
The command Await My Return greatly aids us in keeping this important eternal perspective. Christ is returning to not only take believers home to be with Him forever, but also to reward them for their works. Each and every believer will be held accountable for whether or not they have wisely invested in eternity or chose to squander their resources for selfish gain.
In Romans 14:7-9, Paul is clear that we as believers are not to live for our own desires but rather to live for the Lord. This is actually where the believer finds the secret to true joy and fulfillment in life — not living for ourselves but living for the One who created us, redeemed us, and is returning for us as His bride!
With this in mind, we as believers should be living every moment of our lives to serve the Lord Jesus Christ looking with a joyful and excited expectation for His soon return! Maintaining a focus on Christ’s second coming will not only help us understand our purpose in life, but it will also give us the hope, grace and strength to endure life’s difficult and unknown challenges.
Are you ready for Christ’s return? Is what you are living for worth Christ dying for? Will you hear those words, “Well done thou good and faithful servant”?

Jesus commands us in Matthew 24 to "watch" and "be ready" for His coming. This hopeful expectancy should shape our daily lives, inspiring purity and preparation as we anticipate the day when He will return in glory.
How does awaiting Christ’s return impact our lives? Each day should reflect the reality that Jesus could return at any moment, changing how we live and what we value.
As believers, we are called to watch and pray, devoting ourselves to God’s purposes. Our brief lives are opportunities to prepare for Christ’s return, investing in what matters forever.
We should prepare for Christ's return with joyful expectancy as we focus on faithfulness and holiness, living each moment for the eternal purpose of knowing and pleasing Him.
