Take, Eat, and Drink: Part 1
What does it mean to take, eat, and drink in remembrance of Christ? More than a ritual, communion is a call to remember His sacrifice, abide in Him, and rejoice in our new life through His blood.
Where this command is found:
“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it,
and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
What is the purpose of the Lord’s Supper? While there are many, one particular reason which is given by Jesus and repeated over and over in the New Testament is, “this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19b). As believers, in many ways the command of Christ Take, Eat, and Drink found in Matthew 26:26–28, is an opportunity to personally and corporately remember all that Jesus is to us, all that He has done for us, and how that should impact every area of our lives!
In a world full of busyness, deadlines and so many things to clutter our hearts and minds, Jesus gives us an opportunity to be still and remember. But why? When the Israelites failed to remember how God had delivered them from the enslavement of Egypt, they began to stray in their walk with God. In a similar way, we as believers must remember all that Christ is to us and not forget what He has done for us lest, like the children of Israel, we fall prey to the temptations and trappings of our flesh, the world and the devil.
Remembering Christ’s life, death and resurrection through partaking of the Lord’s Supper is far more than just a spiritual ritual. By keeping the precious remembrance of the Person and work of Christ in front of us, it will help shape our everyday lives and the choices we make. We as Christians cannot properly reflect the character, nature and glory of God unless we are regularly remembering the sacrifice Christ made for us as well as His desire to commune and fellowship with us.
By keeping the command Take, Eat, and Drink, we will not only grow in our conformity to the image of Jesus, but we will also become a channel of Christ’s love and life to others within the Body of Christ. Christ is the head of the Body and as we keep Him central by regularly taking part in the Lord’s Supper with other believers, God will develop in us a love for one another resulting in a greater unity in the Body of Christ. One result of this unity will be others recognizing we are disciples of Christ by the love we have for each other.

How does communion impact our daily walk? It reminds us to depend on Christ, strengthens our unity as His body, and keeps our hearts fixed on Him in love and anticipation.
What is the right heart posture for communion? We come not by our own merit but through Christ’s sacrifice. Examining ourselves and walking in the light keeps our fellowship with Him and others unhindered.
